ABOUT THE WORK
The Place She Forgot begins with a siren sitting beyond the water. The sea is still close enough to see, yet she has settled on land, rooted into a place that cannot fully sustain her. Her distance from the water has grown so gradually that she may no longer notice it.
The figure holds two states at once. Her red hair and curved back remain vividly human, while her dress gathers the textures of kelp, stone, and earth. She seems to be becoming part of the ground beneath her, even as the water continues to claim part of her. The painting leaves open whether she will return to it, or whether she remembers that she can.
Carefully observed skin meets thick, accumulating paint along the dress and tail. The waterline divides the composition, but it cannot cleanly divide one life from another. What has been left behind remains present in the figure’s body: familiar, essential, and almost forgotten.
